...an interdepartmental and inter-faculty program involving, on the Fredericton campus of the University: the departments of Anthropology, Economics, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology, of the Faculty of Arts; the Faculty of Administration, and the Faculty of Law. Selected courses from the Saint John campus; departments of Psychology, Sociology, and Business Administration, may be counted for credit.

The programs offered are specifically designed to expose students to knowledge concerning the interface between law and society. Programs are presented from a variety of perspectives represented by participating academic disciplines. Courses for a LWSO program have one common theme: they all explore connections between law and the social order.

Admission to a Law in Society program is open to students who have successfully completed sixty credit hours toward a degree in the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Administration. Students must obtain the approval of the department or faculty in which they major and of a Coordinator of the Law in Society program. With the permission of the appropriate Coordinator, students may count for credit in the Law in Society program courses taken before they enter the program. Although not a requirement of the program, students are strongly encouraged to take a course in Critical Thinking (PHIL 1005) before entry into a LWSO program.

"Law in Society" is...

Law in Society programs aim to illuminate the intimate relationship between law and contemporary societies, from a wide range of theoretical and practical perspectives. A Law in Society program is superb preparation for graduate study in traditional disciplines, and for professional studies including law, public administration, policing, social work, and business.

The Law in Society major consists of thirty credit hours chosen from Law in Society course offerings. Twelve of the thirty credit hours must be chosen from the core courses. Additional core courses may be counted as electives. Core courses must be chosen from at least three departments or faculties. Twenty-four of the thirty credit hours must be upper-level courses (3000 level and above).
