VIOLENCE INVOLVING WEAPONS
STUDENT, FACULTY and STAFF RESPONSIBILITY
The main objective for students, faculty and staff is to minimize potential collateral damage and alert security/police to a situation at the earliest and safest moment.
Incidents Involving Weapons
Familiarize yourself with your surroundings beforehand. Know the locations of phones, emergency exits, and other possible avenues for help.
If you are suspicious of people hanging around or that look out of place, do not hesitate to contact Campus Security at 453-4830.
Trust your instincts.
If you are not at risk of injury during an incident involving the use of weapons and communication is available, call 911.
If unable to notify the Police or Campus Security, summon help discretely by any means at your disposal.
If you are nearest an exit leave the building and quickly proceed to a safe area; if closest to an empty room seek cover in there. If the incident occurs outside, seek refuge in the closest building.
Lock your office/classroom and barricade the door.
Close windows, turn off the lights and audio equipment, ringers on cell phones and have occupants sit on the floor. Preferably against the wall, adjacent to the door and furthest away. Do not sit altogether in the room. Spread out.
Do NOT sound the fire alarm!
Do not leave your secure area until notified by the Police or Security staff. Avoid open areas and be as quiet as possible.
Do not attempt to drive off campus as this will cause traffic congestion and delay/hinder emergency response, possibly costing valuable seconds.
Once the Police or Campus Security arrives, follow all their instructions quickly and quietly.
Armed Robbery/Threats/ Hostage Takings
If you are confronted by an armed individual, the University recommends that you co-operate fully with any demands. You should give up deposit bags or personal items, and should follow any requests which do not endanger the lives of others.
Dial 453-4830 for Campus Security or 911 for Police. Do not hang up the phone until told to do so (unless it is unsafe to stay on the line).
Do not try to stop, hold, or trap an armed individual.
If you see an armed confrontation taking place but are not involved, try to get away and contact Security or Police.
Try to memorize what the individual looks like and is wearing.
