GRADUATE PROGRAMS OVERVIEW The Department of Psychology, University of New Brunswick (Fredericton campus) currently offers two graduate programs leading to the Ph.D. degree. The doctoral program in clinical psychology is fully accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) and the American Psychological Association (APA).** It was first offered in 1995 and is based on an earlier clinical training program offered at the Master’s level. The clinical program takes a scientist-practitioner approach and seeks to train students for careers as professional psychologists, competent in assessment, intervention, research, and evaluation in a variety of community, academic, and research settings. Its general theoretical orientation falls within the cognitive-social-learning perspective, although faculty interests span a number of content domains, including adult psychopathology, child and adolescent clinical psychology, health psychology, neuropsychology, forensic psychology, cognitive-behavioral therapy, human sexuality and women’s issues. The program also is designed to meet provincial licensing requirements for psychologists as determined by the College of Psychologists of New Brunswick. One of its innovative features is that prior to their first practicum students receive hands-on training in basic assessment and therapy skills in courses offered by the full-time clinical faculty. The Clinical Program Committee is responsible for all aspects of the clinical program, and consists of the full-time professional psychology faculty, one of whom fills the position of Director of Clinical Training, one clinical student representative, a representative from the Clinical Associates (currently Dr. Rebecca Mills, Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation), and the Department Chair. **The Clinical Psychology Program was accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) in 2000 and the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2004. In February 2007, APA announced that it will cease accrediting Canadian clinical psychology programs after 2014. In light of this development, our Clinical Program Committee decided to seek CPA accreditation only for our regularly scheduled accreditation review in 2008-2009. The Program's APA accreditation status expired at the end of 2008. Our decision was made after many years of deliberations with the CPA, the Council of Canadian Professional Psychology Programs (CCPPP), as well as consideration of APA's decision to cease accrediting Canadian Programs. For background information on the CCPPP CPA-only accreditation movement, please visit the CCPPP website as well as the CPA and APA websites. Experimental and Applied Psychology Program The doctoral program in experimental and applied psychology prepares students for careers as researchers and teachers in Psychology.
In doing so, it offers the flexibility for students to explore the experimental and applied aspects of psychology most relevant to their interests.
The central goals of the program are to provide students with a strong research base while allowing them to direct their efforts according to their
interests, whether they are in experimental or applied areas. In more specific terms, the program aims to produce teachers and researchers who can
work in academic or applied settings.
UNB Fredericton offers only a PhD in Psychology, and no Master’s degree. Click here for information on the Master's degree program in Experimental Psychology offered at UNB Saint John.
