Bachelor of Nursing (BN)
An undergraduate program with a strong emphasis on primary health care, the Bachelor of Nursing (BN) degree is a four year program. UNB's four-year basic program includes a majority of course work in Nursing (95 credit hours). As well, courses from the Liberal Arts and Sciences will be taken as required courses and open electives (35 credit hours) for a total of 130 credit hours.
The nursing program has a standard curriculum but students have the opportunity to choose some elective courses. Your in-class work will be supplemented by interesting lab work and valuable, hands-on, clinical experience in hospital settings, people's homes, workplaces, schools and communities. Each year’s required courses (both nursing and non-nursing) must be completed before moving forward into the next year.
A Bachelor of Nursing from UNB qualifies you to write the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination (CRNE) set by the Canadian Nurses Association. If successful, you can then use the title RN as you embark on an exciting career in an ever-changing field.

The Bachelor of Nursing program instills in students a deep-rooted sense of purpose and professionalism. It provides you with skills to enhance your personal development and professional growth, skills that are applicable to many different nursing careers. The program emphasizes the teamwork, leadership and clinical decision-making skills that are essential for working in the primary health-care environment. You also acquire high-level communication skills, as well as health-care promotion and teaching skills.
Knowledge of technical procedures for hands-on nursing care is combined with planning and organizational skill development to ensure that you are prepared to handle any situation. By enrolling in the BN program, you will have the opportunity to practice in a wide variety of sites locally and provincially, and possibly nationally and internationally.
Special Features
Nursing students can choose to study in one of four cities in New Brunswick. The UNB Nursing Program is offered Faculty in Fredericton, Moncton, Bathurst and Saint John. The UNB Nursing curriculum is also offered at Humber College in Toronto.
An innovative curriculum and interactive teaching are unique features that help to ensure the success of all students in the Nursing Faculty. Small classes and lots of interaction among students working in a co-learner environment provide them with the opportunity to build lasting friendships and strong professional connections. Students obtain clinical experience in a variety of settings, including acute care facilities, nursing homes and schools. Some professors make use of distance technology to deliver their courses.
Experimentation in new nursing roles and teamwork with practicing professionals keep the program up-to-date and provide students with the most current information available. The program places great emphasis on the caring practice of nursing with the idea that the human side of the profession is just as important as the technical side
