Library staff are available to assist persons with disabilities with use of library materials, equipment, and access. Persons with special needs are invited to contact either the Head Law Librarian or the Reference/Instruction Librarian to discuss, in confidence, the ways that staff can help you use the library and its resources conveniently and efficiently.

There are some periods of time when only one library staff member is on duty.  Most of these times are on weekends or in the evenings.  If a person with a disability is planning to come to the library outside of normal weekday business hours, we suggest that he/she contact the Head Law Librarian ahead of time to ensure that staff are available to assist, particularly with the use of the elevator, or to retrieve library books for persons with visual challenges.

 

UNB STUDENT ACCESSIBILITY CENTRE

UNB has a centre to serve students with accessibility issues. The Student Accessibility Centre would be happy to discuss your accessibility needs, so please feel free to contact them.

 

SPECIAL-NEEDS EQUIPMENT AND TRAINING

The library obtained funding from the UNB Student Technology Fee Committee for the purchase of a special-needs wireless laptop (see lending policies below). This laptop is equipped with a scanner, headphones, and special software for the use of learning or physically challenged UNB students, faculty or staff. For more information about this laptop, please contact either the Head Law Librarian or the Reference/Instruction Librarian.

IN-HOUSE LENDING POLICIES

1. This laptop is for the use of UNB students, faculty and staff only. The portable workstation consists of one wireless/ethernet enabled laptop, a scanner, and headphones (to permit use in open areas). Both Kurzweil and JAWS software are mounted on this unit, in addition to the collection of other campus-wide applications.

2. The workstation is designed to support authorized users with learning challenges (e.g., dyslexia) associated with language, as well as those who feel that they are not sufficiently fluent in English to accomplish assignments or other work without special assistance. This equipment is also available to authorized users who are vision impaired or otherwise physically challenged, who could benefit from use of this equipment. Persons who wish to use this equipment should contact the Head Law Librarian or the Reference/Instruction Librarian, or law students or faculty may wish to contact the Associate Dean of Law.

3. All persons authorized to use this equipment need to receive prior training in its use. Please contact either the Head Law Librarian or the Reference/Instruction Librarian to arrange for training.

4. After the initial appointment and training, this equipment may be borrowed by any authorized user (see above) by presenting a valid UNB ID at the Law Library Circulation Desk. The loan period is three (3) hours and the equipment must be used within the Law Library. The equipment may be renewed for a further three hours if no other authorized user is waiting to use it, but it is subject to recall during any renewal loan period if needed by another authorized special-needs user.

5. If a user of this equipment wishes to access it in a private setting, the library will make every effort to reserve a library conference room for this purpose, if one is available. Prior arrangements should be made by contacting the Reference/Instruction Librarian.

6. This computer is governed by Law Library policy regarding appropriate use of Law Library computing equipment and is subject to the UNB policy relating to use of University computing facilities.

 

OPTELEC WORKSTATION

The Law Library has an "Optelec 20/20 Vision Plus" workstation which magnifies print materials and images displayed on a computer screen for visually-impaired persons. Any library user is welcome to use this Optelec workstation, which is located near the Reference area on the library's first floor.
