NEW STUDENT ADVICE

newstudent

We understand that you have many things to think about before your arrival.  To the left of this page you will find a series of topics you should be familiar with before you arrive.

(A Chinese translation of all of this information is available for download: ISAO NewStudents)

The International Student Advisor's Office is here to offer you advice and support on a wide range of topics.  The more prepared you are before your arrival, the easier you will find the transition.

Contact us anytime at:  isao@unb.ca with your questions or concerns.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS THAT CAN SAVE YOU MONEY:

  • You must have travel insurance from your home country to cover you while you travel to Canada.

  • Dental work is very expensive in Canada.  Your UNB health insurance will only cover a small portion of the cost so be sure to have a dental check-up before you leave.

  • Prescription glasses and contact lenses are also very expensive in Canada.  If you wear glasses you should bring an extra pair in case you lose or break the ones you wear.

  • If you have a pre-existing medical condition - you may not be covered be UNB's health insurance - contact us in advance so that we can ensure your health and safety.

  • UNB health coverage does not cover a female student who is pregnant when she arrives, or a student's wife who is pregnant when she arrives.  The cost for pregnancy care and delivery is between $5,000-$10,000 or more.

  • Translate all your important documents (such as medical documents) to English before you arrive.  Translation service is not easy to get in Fredericton.
