SOCIAL INSURANCE NUMBER (SIN)

Everyone in Canada who is employed requires a Social Insurance Number.

If you work on campus, or have an off-campus work permit, you must have a Social Insurance Number (SIN) in order to be paid.

If you are a graduate student, on a graduate teaching assistantship, your department will need to know your social insurance number in order to pay you.

Documentation Needed to Acquire a SIN:

ON CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT:

1.  Employment Contract on employer's letterhead (see below)

2.  Valid Study Permit and Passport

 

OFF CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT:

1.  Valid StudyPermit and Passport

2.  Valid off campus work permit

IMPORTANT: ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT

All students who have employment on campus are required to have their employer fill out the following form:  http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sc/sin/pdf/employmentcontract_eng.pdf

This employment confirmation form must be copied on your employer's office letterhead.
