Foreign Government Awards (FGA) Program

Organization: International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS).

Description:As part of the implementation of cultural agreements with the Government of Canada, the governments of Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, Korea, Mexico, the Philippines, and Russia will offer awards to Canadian graduate students intended to assist Canadian students in furthering their studies or conducting research abroad at the master's, doctoral or post-doctoral level, and normally cover a period of at least six months. The Government of Italy offers short-term scholarships (less than two months) for Italian language and culture courses. Most countries offer a wide selection of disciplines to which awards may be applied, but not all countries offer awards for all disciplines. The governments of Japan and Russia also offer awards for undergraduate studies.

Graduate Fellowships Program: Self-placed fellowships

Organization: Organization of American States

Description: A fellowship can be awarded for graduate study or research in an educational institution in any of the OAS member countries, with the exception of the country where the candidate is a citizen or a permanent resident.  A fellowship may be also awarded for study by distance education where the participant remains in the country of origin for all or most of the time, if the program is offered by an institution not based in the country of origin.

Field of Study: All fields except medical sciences and related areas, and introductory language studies, for advanced study at the graduate level and graduate research.

Cadieux-Léger Fellowship

Organization: The Policy Research Division (CPC) of the Department of Foreign Affairs

 Description: The Cadieux-Léger Fellowship is a foreign policy research position in the Policy Research Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) which provides direct experience in a policy planning environment.

Title: International Research Linkages

Organization: Foreign Affairs Canada

Description: Facilitate international collaboration within the academic community while fostering the development of permanent exchange networks by providing assistance to teams of researchers from Canada and one or more countries in order to organize seminars or other forms of research linkages.
Foreign Affairs Canada is offering grants of up to $10,000 to assist in the establishment or the development of international research networks in the area of Canadian Studies between Canada and other countries.

Field of Study: Studies or research on Canada within the social sciences and the humanities, such as business studies, economics, law, international relations, history, politics, sociology, geography, arts, literature, linguistics, linguistic duality, education, communications policy, media studies, planning, science policy, social administration, environmental studies, architecture, and other related fields;

German Scholarships and Fellowships

Organization: Duetsch Kultur International

Description: Offers a variety of scholarship opportunities and research fellowships for visiting professors and doctoral students.

Humboldt Research Fellowships Program

Organization: The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Description AvH grants Humboldt Research Fellowships to highly gifted and qualified scholars and scientists. The program lets them carry out research projects of their own design in Germany. Research fellowships are offered on a world-wide competitive basis and scholars from all nations and all academic disciplines may apply.

Field of Study: Any but research must be done in Germany

Trans-Coop Programme in Research

Organization: The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Description: AvH supports transatlantic research cooperation among German, American and/or Canadian scholars (PhD required) in the humanities, social sciences, economics, and law by means of the TransCoop Programme. Joint research initiatives can receive up to EUR 45.000 (currently about US$ 43,000) over a three-year period for projects such as, short-term research visits, special conferences and/or workshops.

Cooperative Grants Program (COOP)

Organization: Association for International Educators

Description: The Cooperative Grants Program (COOP) of NAFSA: Association of International Educators provides seed funds of up to $10,000, as well as programming and grant writing resources, for projects that creatively involve post-secondary international and U.S. study abroad students in U.S. campuses and communities. COOP invites proposals for innovative projects that: 

  • encourage international students and scholars attending U.S. colleges and universities to become involved in and knowledgeable about U.S. culture and society apart from their study/research programs;                               
  • enhance the experience of U.S. students involved in study abroad prior to their departure or upon their return; or                               
  • stimulate and strengthen interaction among international students, their U.S. peers, faculty, and communities.

Title: University Partnerships in Cooperation and Development

Organization: Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada

Description: Projects funded through UPCD respond to Canada's Official Development priorities, CIDA's poverty-reduction mandate as well as to the development priorities of developing countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America where the project takes place. Activities involve teams at each of the partner organizations, making them institutional linkages, as opposed to individual grants or collaboration between two professors.

Field of Study: Projects typically include a range of activities, for example: curriculum development, strengthening academic departments and training and further education for professors

Canada-European Community Program for Co-operation in Higher Education and Training

Organization: Social Development Canada

Description: The program provides funding for projects that aim to increase the quality of human resource development and ways to prepare students for work in the global economy; transatlantic student mobility; institutional partnerships among post-secondary schools in Canada and Europe; and an exchange of knowledge and expertise in higher education and training. Provides subsidies for travel and accommodations. Participating countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom

ERASMUS MUNDUS

Organization: European Union

Description: The Erasmus Mundus programme is a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a centre of excellence in learning around the world. It supports European top-quality Masters Courses and enhances the visibility and attractiveness of European higher education in third-countries. It also provides EU-funded scholarships for third-country nationals participating in these Masters Courses, as well as scholarships for EU-nationals studying in third-countries.

Indian Studies Fellowships

Organization: Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute

Description: Academic Fellowships are for a minimum of three to a maximum of twelve months. Arts Fellowships are for a minimum of four months and a maximum of twelve months. India Studies Fellowships provide a monthly living allowance of Rs 16,000 a monthly research stipend of Rs 4,000 and return airfare to India.

Canadian Partnership Programs

Organization: CIDA

Description: The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) carries out its mandate through different programs and projects around the world.  Through its Canadian Partnership Programs, CIDA can support organizations in Canada’s voluntary and private sectors. These sectors work in partnership with organizations in developing countries. They also have activities to raise public awareness or get people involved in Canada.
