Turning the Tide to Sustainability In a Canadian-Cuban venture, a CIDA-funded project has combined Canadian and Cuban experience in the development of coastal resource management expertise within the Cuban marine science sector. Entitled “Turning the Tide of Sustainability – Human Resource Development in the Cuban Marine Sector”, the 5 year, 1.2$-million CIDA-Funded initiative aimed to increase the understanding and management of biodiversity through education, training and international cooperation. In pursuit of this goal, the project has made the achievement of providing Up-to-date curriculum and new teaching/research resources at Cuban institutions, and has trained 61 Cuban undergraduates, graduates, and senior scientists during marine science courses in Cuba and Canada. Through research it has established a growing 'baseline' database on Cuba's diverse coastal and marine ecosystems such as coral reefs, mangroves, and sea grass beds. The project has further lead to the establishment of a new UNBSJ undergraduate field course on tropical marine ecology. A Gender Equity report has been drawn up about the status of women in the marine sector, and general research results have been rendered more sustainable because of increased networking between Cuban and international marine experts.
