Improving Chinese Agriculture

Is there happiness in farming in China?  A joint New Brunswick-Chinese agricultural development has helped to add vibrancy to this sector of the Chinese economy.  A five-year project initiated in October 1998 matched UNB SJ team members and NBCC personnel with a Chinese university, the Fujian Agricultural/Land University in pursuit of this goal.  According to their mission statement, the project developed “FAFU's capacity to teach, research, train and provide leadership within the Chinese agricultural sector”.  The project achieved numerous feats in pursuit of this goal.

Notably, two faculty members of FAFU earned the MBA degree at UNB Saint John.  Many steps were taken in pursuit of establishing a Center for Studies of Women in Agriculture at the Chinese University – a preliminary gender assessment survey was conducted and baseline data on gender distribution of faculty and staff were collected.  Academically, FAFU faculty and students have been introduced to new socio-economic terms, the concept of gender and gender-related issues, Canadian agricultural organization and services, and contemporary developments in international business.  An ESL and Reference Library with required equipment were established and a needs assessment of the area conducted.  The project has drawn up future plans including the development of FAFU’s expertise by curriculum review and further empirical research.
