A Note from Dr. John McLaughlin:

I have always been somewhat active physically (Maggie and I love hiking and for a long time I played squash and racquetball) and took reasonably good care of myself (or so I thought).

But in recent years (and especially as I have hit a certain age), I have begun to take personal wellness more seriously.  My walking is more structured and is supplemented by a workout on an elliptical machine (which I hate but so far have faithfully committed to it).  I am more concerned about what I eat and when, and so forth.

My motivation is partly professional (I have a seven day/week job with lots of long engaged days in which sustained energy and stamina is essential).  But also personal – I have just turned 60 (and will become a grandfather this summer).  There is so much that Maggie and I still want to do, and we have got to be as healthy as possible, to accomplish our goals.

So it’s important to be active, to be reasonably careful about our diet (although there are things I just can’t give up!) and generally treat wellness as a personal priority.
