Congratulations to UNB's Woodsmen's Team !

The UNB Men's A Woodsmen's Team has had great success in competitions this year.

January 26-27, they finished in first place once again at the McGill University competition, winning 10 of 13 events!

They are in first place heading into the final competition of the year in Truro. The Woodsmen's Team is certainly doing their part to uphold the tradition of strong teams from UNB, very fitting during our Centennial year!

In addition, I'd like to recognize all the students who participate on all the Woodsmen's Teams for all of the effort you put into preparing for and attending events. We are proud of you!

43rd Annual UNB & MCFT Woodsmen Competition was a success!
Congratulations to the Woodsmen's Team for a spectacular showing at the 43rd ANNUAL UNB & MCFT WOODSMEN COMPETITION on Saturday!

Hosting 23 intercollegiate teams from Ontario, Quebec, NB, NS & Maine, not only did they win overall,  they recorded THE best showing of a Collegiate team since the inception of the sport

After winning the overall Canadian Intercollegiate Lumberjacking Association (CILA) championship last year, the current UNB Woodsmen team is clearly a dominant force yet again. In the crosscut event, they sawed 6 cuts in just over 20 seconds, besting the second place team by 10 seconds.  They broke a cookie in the bucksaw event, and while having to saw an extra cut, still placed second.  They won the underhand chop and the standing chop and the quarter split.  Overall, the UNB Woodsmen's won 9 of 13 events and had at least 92 points in the other 4 events, for a total of 1386 points out of a possible 1400 points.

In conjunction with the Centennial of forestry education at UNB, there was also a "Best of the Best Woodsmen's Challenge" with 7 alumni teams. The (mostly) recently graduated team of Pierre Mezzetta, Dave Patriquin, Colby MacDonald, Marcus Zwicker, Brad Butt and Mike McNeill took top honors with 500.8 out of a possible 600 points, edging out the "UNB Original Legends" (from the 60's and 70's) who had 488 points. The UNB Originals were graced by two of the members of the very first UNB Woodsmen's team - Joe Trevors, Florenceville and Dick Walker, from Miramichi.  Another team - "Cruise Control" from the late 1980's, were fortunate to have all six original team members present (Mike Reagon, BC; Phil Klevorick, Nevada; Digger Pond, ON; Brian Farwell, BC; Rob Anderson, Sussex and Rod Cumberland, Fredericton). Notice how far folks travelled for the event!

In the "Bull of the Woods" individual alumni champion events, spectators were treated to watching some of the best current-day competitors go head-to-head.  They included John Walker, Terry Basso and Darren Dean who all compete on the West Coast in the CANLOG circuit as well as the Canadian STIHL Timbersports Series, where John Walker placed 9th just last month, Lindsay McGill and Hugh Hawley, as well as several east coast Professional competitors such as Bruce Chisholm, Dave Patriquin and Rod Cumberland. John Walker with 438 points, and Rod Cumberland with 472 points, finished second and first overall in the alumni individual competition.
