  • Four second year Engineering students, David Dudley (ME), Edward Henderson (ME), Ian Soutar (ME), and Shane Hartlen (CE), who placed 1st in the Atlantic Engineering Competition, Junior Design, Moncton, Feb. 5 - 6 2005, have also placed 1st in the National Engineering Competition March 4 - 6 2005, Calgary .

The problem presented to them was a hypothetical situation that involved an emergency evacuation of an underwater laboratory.
They had to construct an offshore free floating structure that could lift a load out of water. The required machine had to lift personnel from ocean level up to the ship. They were to design and construct a scale model. The personnel were replicated by a water bottle, to be lifted to a height of 75 cm above water level. The structure had to be free floating and taller than 75 cm to account for the height of the bottle as well as the floatation of the structure.

This competition is similar to practical engineering practices, in terms of time and financial management. They  were able to complete the project in the time allotted, and present their design to judges, students and other observers. The team's presentation included discussing such topics as structural and mechanical design, as well as repeatability and economical feasibility.

A picture of the team is available here.
In this competition, the objective and material were not given until the day of the event. Each team was given four hours to design and construct a working model. The objective of the the project was to move a pile of sand into the back of a tonka truck, located 15" from the pile. Teams were not only judged on the final application of the constructed machine, but also on team work, communication, and economic feasibility.
