New Directions in Learning

The Faculty of Education offers an undergraduate program that provides you with the understanding and skills to be an effective teacher, whether of preschoolers, teenagers or adults. You will not only learn about teaching at your chosen level, but also about the nature of education, human development, and how to work with special needs students. Our newly revised curriculum has put UNB on the cutting edge of teacher education.

Programs that Make a Difference

School Years Option:

The Faculty of Education offers an exciting eleven-month Bachelor of Education degree which follows the completion of another 4-year Bachelor's degree in any field. The school years option has two streams: elementary and secondary. Applicants to the BEd at UNB should ensure that they meet the admission requirements for the program stream of their choice.

Admission requirements:

All applicants must have at least 1 term course of university level English. Applicants wishing to enter the elementary stream must have a minimum of 30 credit hours of teachable content that spans at least four different categories (English, mathematics, science, humanities, health and physical education, the Arts and modern languages). Applicants wishing to enter the secondary stream must have a combined minimum of 48 credit hours of teachable content in two different areas, either 30 credit hours in a first concentration and 18 credit hours in a second or 24 credit hours in each area.

Because classroom experience is crucial to becoming an effective teacher, we provide students with a fully integrated practicum within the province of New Brunswick that will span the first nine months of the program.

A Faculty for You!

The Education program at UNB offers you the chance to take more courses in a specialized areas of interest than most universities, while still maintaining some diversification. Specialization areas include: Aboriginal Education, Second Language Education, Art, Health, Liberacy/Drama, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Early Childhood Education, Special Education, Technology Education, Guidance and Counselling.

The Faculty has a combined enrollment of approximately 600 undergraduate and graduate students and 32 full-time professors.

Many of the faculty members have specialized backgrounds in the areas in which they teach as well as public school teaching experience. Since 1975, the Faculty has contracted with a number of agencies for the delivery of international projects in Kenya, Bhutan and Trinidad.

Faculty members regularly work with teachers in the field and have been instrumental in writing many of the curriculum documents for the Province of New Brunswick, as well as textbooks used across the country. They provide a rich academic and professional environment in which you can learn.

You will also be exposed to several externally-funded research and development centres housed in the Faculty. These centres include:

The Early Childhood Education Centre

Opportunities Beyond the Degree Teachers

The BEd degree is exceptionally versatile. With this degree, you will be very comfortable in front of a group, able to work collaboratively with others on team projects, and understand how learning occurs so that you are best able to meet the diverse learning needs of your students. The New Brunswick Teacher's License you will be eligible for is transportable. This means that you can teach in public schools across North America and beyond as well as pursuing the many teaching related career opportunities that fall outside of the public education system. Every day more teaching opportunities open up around the world as the link between education and economic prosperity and the importance of lifelong learning become known.
