E/Merging Literacies: Parents learn as they teach their children

National Literacy Secretariat awarded $160,000 for 2000-2002

Objectives:

  • Pilot a National Train the Trainer literacy program and network
  • Establish a national network for dissemination and feedback
  • Promote an enfranchising approach to literacy teaching and learning
  • Develop coherent and accessible literacy material for adults, primarily women, who are mothering young children
  • Enable literacy learning through literacy teaching
  • Value the diverse experiences of mothers and young children in the context of literacy learning and teaching

Plan of Action Year One: September 2000 - August 2001.

Coordinate a National Train the Trainer Pilot

September - October 2000 Develop a National Train the Trainer Pilot program based upon our PLC experience and materials.

November -December 2000

  • Run a National Train the Trainer Family Literacy Pilot
  • Evaluate the pilot sessions
  • Incorporate Feedback into the Train the Trainer Program
  • Establish an electronic feedback mechanism with this national group to garner feedback into their training in their respective province
  • Establish an electronic feedback process to gather input into proposed parent materials.

Develop cross written books for parents and children

January-April 2001 (Research and Consultation Period)

  • Research cross-writing initiatives
  • Extrapolate themes and messages from each of the current PLC literacy booklets
  • Storyboard the proposed parent materials based upon the extracted messages
  • Research the needs of selected parents in the context of their literacy interactions with young children
  • Consult with NB paraprofessionals and professionals at NB focus group sites
  • Consult our PLC National Advisory Group

May-August 2001 (Development & Field Test Period for Parent Booklets)

  • Produce draft materials suitable for parents that bring familiar texts of talk and action to the printed page and that give parents strategies for promoting literacy growth with their children in the context of the everyday
  • Set up photography shoots as per storyboard
  • Hire writers to create text that draws upon storyboard messages
  • Prepare draft parent materials (most likely 8 themed books)
  • Field test/evaluate materials

Year Two: September 2001-June 30th 2002.

  • Revise Materials
  • Re-evaluate with focus groups composed of parents, paraprofessionals and professionals
  • Produce the galley proofs
  • Publish
  • Distribute
