In the context of ED5102, Curriculum and Evaluation in the Early Years, groups of university students worked with children in the UNB 4 year old on site classroom. Collectively, we co-construct projects with the children and the classroom teachers. The project approach was developed by Lillian Katz and Sylvia Chard. We work with the format and structure presented by Chard in her book The Project Approach. The project approach is a pedagogically sound way to engage children's minds and hearts while at the same time integrating curriculum.

Project # 1 - Birds' Nests in Spring

by Lucinda Dow and Sarah Crawley.

This project took place over a 4 week period in the UNB 4 year old classroom. Lucinda and Sarah built upon children's current knowledge and curiosities about birds. The bird project was part of a larger unit on spring.Numerous curriculum connections were made.

Curriculuar Connections

The Early Childhood Centre ran an after school arts program for children aged 7-11. Anne Hunt, the classroom teacher in conjunction with Pam Nason and Pam Whitty, two early childhood professors, developed three different arts based topics. Below you will find artifacts of the children's work.

In addition, Anne Hunt, Pam Nason and Pam Whitty presented a talk at the Lilian Katz Symposium in each of these topics. You can find the children's work and the educators talks below.
