Creating a Poetic Piece: Seasnail

Playing with words employs all kinds of linguistic knowledge, and, because it's play, there are no `right' and `wrong' ways of expression. Katelyn is clearly discovering the pleasure of making language flow in this delightful poetic "Seasnail" story.  (see next three ilustrations ) It is through playing with rhythms and patterns that Katelyn is exploring and taking risks with language. Katelyn has been exposed to texts that offer rich rhythmic, patterned language. The "Seasnail" story clearly demonstrates her knowledge of pictures to communicate meaning, her understanding of poetic language structure, her ability to use expressive language, and her understanding of the use of sequence in story lines..

The artwork accompanying  her  text  demonstrates how children often examine their work and  see further possibilities and new ideas.  The original picture really does have a  hole in the heart which illustrates her text beautifully as she writes, "Oh, oh, There is a hole in the heart!"

See next image for the text of the poem.
