Irises
Today I wanted to build
on what the children had seen at the gallery
and talk with them about artists and how everyone sees things differently.
I used a book called No One Saw: Ordinary Things Through the
Eyes of an Artist by Bob Raezka.
I began by reading them
the story. I then showed them copies of two paintings, the first
was Black Iris by Georgia O'Keefe and the second was Iris
by Van Gogh. I asked the children if the two paintings looked the
same and had them describe how they were different (one is extremely
close up and the other is of a large bunch of different irises growing
outside), how the artist might have painted them, looked at the
flowers, etc. We then looked at a bunch of irises that Pam had brought
in from her garden. I encouraged the children to look at the flower
and paint or draw what they saw. This week, beacuse of their responses
to pastels at the gallery, I decided to provide the childrenwith
a choice between watercolour and pastel (chalk and oil) or all three
if they wanted. Once again, I encouraged the children to think about
what they wanted to paint before they began. |
