We
love this drawing of the boat for its vibrant colours, its resonance
with Max's trip to the land of the Wild Things and that wonderful
sense of the winds guiding the journey. Katelyn, like many other
early literacy explorers, relies more on talk and drawing than on
the printed words to create and convery meaning for herself and
others. Curriculum documents often are helpful with teacher directed
writing and drawing process. In the pressure to meet curriculum
outcomes and the many other demands of classroom life, it is easy
to forget that young children need time to practice various forms
of representation in their own way and with the content of their
lives.
