Q. When do I apply to the BEd program and how much is the application fee?

A. The application deadline each year is January 31. There is an application fee of $45.00

Q. Can I begin the program in January instead of September?

A. As of Fall 2008, our Bachelor of Education program is an 11 month program with a single, late August, entry point.

Q. Can I transfer credits from another university towards the Bachelor of Education degree at UNB?

A. The Faculty of Education does not accept transfer credits for Education courses completed at any institution prior to acceptance into the BEd program at UNB.  Students may obtain substitution credit for education courses which have been taken at this or another institution, where the grade received is "C" or higher, and which meet program requirements.  In these cases, alternate education courses must be successfully completed to meet program requirements.

Q. What are the prerequisites I require in order to teach at the elementary or primary level?

A. All applicants must have at least 3 credit hours of university level English. To be admitted to the BEd Early Years stream, applicants must have a minimum of 30 credit hours of teachable content that spans at least four different categories (English, mathematics, science, humanities, health and physical education, the Arts and modern languages).

NOTE: Students entering this stream will be placed in an elementary school. Applicants should note that not all teachable subjects fall into the prerequisite categories.

Q. What are the prerequisites I require in order to teach at the secondary level?

A. All applicants must have at least 3 credit hours of university level English. To be admitted to the BEd Middle/Young Adult stream, applicants must complete a major of at least 30 credit hours in one teachable subject and 18 credit hours in another teachable subject. Or, students must complete at least 24 credit hours in each of two teachable subjects before entering the BEd.

The Province of New Brunswick regards the following as teachable subjects:

English, French, Languages (German & Spanish), History, Geography, Political Science, Classics, Economics, Canadian Studies, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science, Physical Education, Music, Drama, Visual Arts, Theatre Arts, Graphic Arts and Design, Technology Education, Computer Science, Information Technology, Family Studies, Home Economics, Business Administration, Commerce.

Note: Students entering this stream will be placed in a secondary school which could either be a middle school or a high school. Applicants should contact the faculty for advice.

We are unable to offer programs in all teachable areas.

Q. In which province(s) and countries am I able to teach after completing your program?

A. There is an agreement across Canada between Departments of Education and universities that grant the BEd. If you receive a teacher's license in New Brunswick, you can apply for a teacher's license in other Canadian provinces. You will need to pay a fee for each province for which you will be licensed. However, some provinces require specific prerequisites from your undergraduate degree in order to be licensed in their province. It is important to check with the Department of Education in the province in which you wish to be licensed prior to applying to the Bachelor of Education degree to ensure you meet their requirements

Q. What does my grade point average have to be in order to get into the Education program?

A. In order to be competitive, your cumulative grade point average should not be below 2.7 (in the B range or 70%). While this is the minimum, admission is highly competitive and therefore minimum levels may not be sufficient to secure a spot.

Q. What if my cumulative grade point average is below 2.7 (i.e. 67%)?

A. Our admissions committee generally will advise such students to consider taking further non-education courses to upgrade. The number of courses and the requirements could be determined by contacting the Associate Dean of Education.

Q. How long will it take me to complete a BEd as a second degree?

A. It will take students 11 months of full-time study to complete the BEd.

Q. How many courses may I take each term?

A. The program will be set up by the Faculty of Education. The three terms are Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer.

Q. Can I get a teacher's license if I am not a Canadian citizen?

A. In order to be granted a teacher's license in the Province of New Brunswick, you need to be a Canadian citizen or have landed immigrant status.

Q. Can I choose the location of my practicum?

A. The Faculty of Education will provide students with the opportunity to identify New Brunswick School District preferences but the final assignment is determined by the Faculty.

Q. Can I pursue the 11 month BEd on a part-time basis?

A. The BEd at UNB requires students to attend on a full-time basis.
