Career Tasks At University

First Year - Transition/Adjustment/Exploration

• find your way around campus and get involved with campus and community activities;

• develop your academic skills (study skills, exam preparation, essay writing, research);

• explore and clarify your academic interests choosing a major or concentration; • consider opportunities for work/study/travel abroad;

• talk to a faculty advisor;

• identify problems that get you down and take action;

• visit the UNB Career Resource Centre and Student Employment Services.

Second Year - Career Assessment and Research

• identify personal strengths, skills, interests, values and related these to career options;

• explore work options in your field of study - What can I do with a degree in ______?;

• build non-academic skills and leadership experience through campus and community activities;

• if uncertain about your career direction, book a career consultation at the Career Resource Centre (458-7818);

• attend job/career fairs, eg. UNB Employment Services Career Fair.

Third Year - Get Specific!

• research work opportunities/graduate schools/funding (deadlines are offered as early as October);

• register/write admission tests (the process can take up to a year);

• try job-shadowing and information interviewing to find out what the work is really like;

• clarify your career goals (short-medium term);

• develop resume-writing and interviewing skills;

• do a “grad check” to ensure you will meet the requirements to graduate next year;

Fourth Year - The Final Push - Transition to Work (or Grad School )

• apply to “grad schools” in the fall;

• target employers starting in September;

• develop creative work search skills and self-marketing strategies;

• learn what it takes for success on the job;

•  Important : Apply to graduate from the University.
