The Career Planning ProcessAt Counselling Services, we see lots of students who are very anxious about their future; not knowing where to start implementing their “plan”! So how do you figure out that plan? Well, you start by looking at the steps you need to take to make a career decision; this is called the career planning PROCESS. That's right, it is a process, and not a magic formula that will give you immediate results (sorry! I know it's a bummer to hear that!). This process takes time and reflection, but the good news is… we can help you out. If you call for a career intake appointment at Counselling Services (we serve both UNB and STU, part-time and full-time students) we will meet with you and actually help you along every step of your career planning process … imagine that! What does the career planning process look like? The first step is to take a full personal inventory – determining your interests, skills, values and personality preferences. That is a lot of work, but it is the essential first step to take… otherwise, how will you ever know which jobs (over 25 000 of them) will be best suitable for you? That brings me to the next steps, where you actually start exploring those job options. In step 2, we help you identify career possibilities according to your personal assessment of yourself (remember that important first step) and in step 3, we will show you how to research those career options (we have a fantastic Career Resource Centre). In step 4, you will need to do lots of career research; gathering all the information about your possible career options by using print information, doing internet research, and talking to people in the field. After all this work, you will finally be better equipped to decide between some career alternatives and you may actually be closer to making that PLAN (step 5)! Yeah! So if this sounds like fun, don't hesitate to call us at 453-4820 (Counselling Services is located at 26 Bailey Drive , 2nd Floor, C.C. Jones Student Services Centre). It's never too late to make your plan!
