Around 1986, UNB Counseling Services organized a series of talks for gay and lesbian students who had sought their assistance. Following this initiative, a small number of students started meeting informally on a weekly basis and with little publicity. In 1990 they founded the Gay and Lesbian Association (GALA) and were granted official recognition by UNB Student Union. An important change occurred around the Year 2000 when meetings were transferred from the relative seclusion of the Alumni Building to the more public Arts Faculty Common Room, reflecting the more open attitudes on campus towards our community. At the same time, the name was changed from GALA to Spectrum to represent better the diverse nature of our membership. While the mission and purpose of the association have remained the same, attendance at our meetings has increased from a small number in the early days to 25 or more at the present time.

We work closely with other GLBTQ resources on campus, such as the Sexuality Centre and the Safe Spaces Project, as well as in the community. See our links page for a more detailed listing.
