Friday Speech "Kotbah"

January  19th, 2006: Done By Yahya Abuamer  , Jazzah'u Allah'u  khairan.

the khotbah is taken from  http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~magamiet/SA_khutbahs/moderation_the_way_of_islam.htm

Extremism is a new sickness that seems to plague us individually and collectively in relationships with one another. We express extremes in our interpersonal behaviour, extremes in our lifestyles, extremes in our habits, like eating and sleeping and even talking, extremes in our interpretation of our dîn or political ideals, extremes in our expectations of our children's abilities and many, many more.

These extremes are often not related to natural, God-given values and make it difficult for anyone…even our closest kin… to live in peace and harmony with us. In this khutbah we hope, insha-Allah, to look at and rid ourselves of this scourge, which threatens our survival as an ummah.

In the above verse of the Holy Qur'ân, Allah SWT offers us a clear direction on our stand in life: to be justly balanced in everything that we do ! Only then, says Allah, can we truly be witnesses over the nations . Parties often argue with one another because they hold extremely opposite views and refuse to compromise and accommodate each other's views. It is only an outsider who is just that can bring them back to reason and make them realise their faults.

How often do we not suffer untold misery because of our excessive practices? Do we constantly have to blame market forces or use other capitalist euphemisms to justify our excessive spending? Sure, everyone loves a beautiful home, but do we have to land ourselves into financial difficulty and subject our families to humiliation and ridicule to acquire one? We would all love to have the beautiful things in life …and why not -- most of them are free. But let us plan and budget carefully, even if it means taking longer to get the things we want. Allah SWT advises us in the Holy Qur'ân on the management of our spending:

"Those who, when they spend, are not extravagant and not niggardly,But hold a just balance between

those extremes….." (25: 67)

The secret of success in any effort lies in our ability to keep a "just balance" between the extremes. There are some of us who are by the means to eat or dress properly, but we are thrifty to the extreme -- to the extent that we starve ourselves and our families and dress like tramps. Once again let us keep the just balance between the extremes of extravagance and stinginess. We are reminded of the Hadîth in which Prophet Muhammad saws advises the ummah to dress according to their means. Abul Ahwâs reported from his father who said: "I came from the Messenger of Allah while there was a torn cloth on my person. Rasûlullah saws asked: "Do you have wealth ?" "Yes," said I. He asked: "What wealth do you have?" "Every kind of wealth," replied I, "Allah has given me camels, cows, sheep, horses and slaves." Rasûlullah saws said: "When Allah has given you wealth, let the signs of the gifts of Allah and Allah's generosity be shown upon your person." (Nisa-i)

In another Hadîth Rasûlullah saws said: "The generous man is near Allah, near the Jannah (Paradise), near the people, and far from the Jahannam (Hell); and the ignorant charitable man is dearer to Allah than the pious miser." (Tirmizi)

is comments were that we eat too much, hence many of us are overweight; we talk too much, hence we often find ourselves in trouble; and we sleep too much, hence we are often late for our fajr prayers. I'm sure that if he had stayed longer he would have had a longer list! The Golden Rule is once again moderation. Let us consider the wisdom of Luqman as he addresses his son, as Allah SWT describes it in the Holy Qur'ân:

"And swell not your cheek (for pride) at men, nor walk in insolence through the earth; for Allah loves not the arrogant boaster. And be moderate in your pace, and lower your voice; for the harshest of sounds without doubt is the braying of the ass."

(S31: 18-19)

How true do these words not ring out when we think of those around us: the boaster and his/her despicable arrogance or the loud-mouth outbraying an ass! Not only are they despised by people but by Allah! Moderation is the middle way. 'Alama Yusuf 'Ali, in his comments on these Quranic verses, says: "In all things be moderate. Do not go the pace, and do not be stationary or slow. Do not be talkative and do not be silent. Do not be loud and do not be timid or half-hearted. Do not be too confident, and do not be cowed down." So often we remind ourselves of the limits of our modesty in dressing, but we forget to remind ourselves of the undignified use of our voices in public. Many of us have forgotten how to laugh. It is reported that, when Prophet Muhammad saws laughed, it was hardly audible.

Another equally despicable practice among some of us is to appear self-righteous or religious and to regard all those who do not subscribe to our ideas, as lesser beings or being outside the fold of Islam. It is true that Allah commands us to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. But let us not overstep the authority given to us by Allah SWT by humiliating and hurting the feelings of those that see and interpret things differently. Allah is the ONLY Authority on HIS Qur'an and HIS dîn. Our interpretations are subject to our limited human understanding and intellectual capacities. This is precisely what we are warned against in the Holy Qur'an:

"O you who believe! Make not unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you, but Commit no excess: for Allah loves not those given to excess." (S.5: 87)

To be tolerant is to adopt a moderate, balanced attitude towards a person or an idea. Even if we don't agree with a brother or sister, we can at least control our emotions and give him or her the right to say his or her piece. Why upset ourselves with those around us if they do not see things our way or move around too slowly or speak too softly for our liking (perhaps through old age)? Why should we and our likes and dislikes become criteria for judging others? Have we become too important, too learned to give our attention to those in need of our help. Once again, be careful: don't become self-righteous …let's not become an ummah unto ourselves, cut off from the rest of humankind. Let us rather be tolerant of one another by controlling our emotions and being consistent in all our actions. This is not such a difficult task. In fact, in a Hadîth, Prophet Muhammad saws narrated by Bukhari, Abu Hurraira reported that the Messenger of Allah saws said: "The dîn is easy, and nobody make it difficult…it will overcome him/her. So be steadfast and seek Allah's Nearness. Give good news and seek help at morn and at dusk and some part of a dark night." (Bukhari)

In another Hadîth, S. Ayesha reported that the Messenger of Allah saws said: "The most pleasing of actions to Allah is that which is done continuously (consistently) though it be little." In this Hadîth, Rasûlullâh saws gives us the secret of moderation and success, which is consistency and steadfastness. Do a little at a time, but do it continuously or regularly. Let our students or even our athletes struggling to get fit, take a lesson from this Hadîth -- do a little at a time…but be consistent. How much wisdom is there not in the nursery school ditty?

January  12th, 2006: Done By Yahya Abuamer  , Jazzah'u Allah'u  khairan.

Copy of Friday's Speech:

My Topic today will be about Islam brought realism and marked the end of khawareg( unexplainable natural phenomena e.g miracles ).Prophet Mohammad as other prophets  preformed miracles( only time limited); however,  prophet Mohammad (PBUH) is universal and for all times and place so it is important to evidence to the righteousness of his message; therefore,  he left us with a book(Quran) that batel (falsehood) will never be in it. it's miracle is the guidance in every aspect of human life.  we are left to discover it's greatness by evidence and proof (eg. science methodlogy, and observation)

The following verses describe that The Quran has complete guidance to every aspect of human life. It is a complete guidance to the humanity. In which it is the cure every soul. It is also set up the laws in harmony with the nature (fitrah) of human because Allah created human and know their problem and the cure of it. It creates the balance between heart and mind. It shows how to create harmony between yourself and society.

However, you can see the defection of other laws where it treats what is apparent and this treatment could result another problem.

However, most men are unwilling to accept anything but blasphemy. The reality is there; however, humanity did not reach to the level of as whole because their short sight. However, Allah have promised that humanity will reach to level that will realize the Quran is the word of God.

41:53 In time We shall make them fully understand. Our messages [through what they perceive] in the utmost horizons [of the universe] and within themselves, so that it will become clear unto them that this [revelation] is indeed the truth. [Still,] is it not enough [for them to know] that thy Sustainer is witness unto everything?

Then Allah shows us what the “Khafroon” says  so that will believe in the revelation. They did not want a perfect way of life, a complete guidance, however, they wanted something that they can sense and touch. They wanted  prophet Mohammad (PBUH) to cause spring to gush forth so they can believe his message.

In the next verse 91, they suggested that Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) should posses a garden that has palm and vine cause rivers to gush forth from the ground.

Verse 92 talks about how they went so extreme and requested that Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) to cause the skies to fall dawn in small pieces as Allah threatened and the where were referring to the Day of Judgment. Image that they wanted Allah to punish them so that they believe! Look how tyrant they are, without Allah mercy on mankind; he would have wiped them from the face of the earth. However, Allahs knows what we know and don’t know. What we see and what we don’t see. The new generation of Makkah(their children) accepted Prophet Mohammad message and they carried it to the whole world.  Their children, they saw what their parents could not see. They saw the truth. Allah has explained this phenomenon:

لَقَدْ حَقَّ الْقَوْلُ عَلَى أَكْثَرِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ (36:7)

إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ أَغْلاَلاً فَهِيَ إِلَى الأَذْقَانِ فَهُم مُّقْمَحُونَ (36:8)

God word of condemnation is bounded to become true so they don’t believe.  We made around their necks we have put shackles reaching up to their chins, so that their heads are forced up; this verse A metaphor that describe closed society that what is taught from their parents what is right and what is wrong so they could not see and follow the truth which is Islam, they could not because of the chains are making their necks pointing upward so that they the cannot see down to understand a simple logic will guide them to the truth and that will explain how the young generation accepted Islam because they looked at the two ideologies side by side and it was immanent conclusion to embrace Islam. Closed society will take things as it is without questioning because this is the only option of them.

OR bring forth Allah and the angles face to face before us.  In the Day of Judgment when the believers who are going to paradise their eyes will be replace to with other eyes which can see the Almighty Allah.  In 7:143, When prophet Musa wanted to see Allah, so Allah replied to him that I’m going to reveal myself to the mountain if the mountain remains the same, you can see me and the mountain crumbled into dust. Prophet Musa fell down in swan. So kuffar Qurish have limited imagination of Allah so they wanted to bring him to earth, Imagine that the light of Allah so unique that it can light the earth even despite spherical shape! Again Allah is drawing the attention how the Kuffar with the immature minds cannot see out side the box

The next verse (17:93) Allah indicated other arguments that the Kuffar raised up so that they believe, they asked Prophet Mohammad to have a house made valuable jewelry or he should rise to the skies and they will not believe until he sent down revelation written in ink. Allah instructed the prophet (Say O Prophet): Gloriously Pure is my Load, Am I anything else that a man who brings a message”.  Allah has instructed the prophet to remind them that Mohammad is human like them. He reminded them please be realistic the chapter of humanity that Allah brought “khawarg” is ended when this message revealed. I’m sure you have heard about prophets’ stories and other miracles that confirm that the revelation is from God. Where jinnes can sit an hear the orders that Allah put it and then informs the witches and another phase of humanity immerged where the truth can be seen from the Quran and the prophet hadiths  and also Allah invited the believers to discover the truth by pondering about the universe and looking to how Allah have created his kingdom from camel, skies, mountains, and the earth how it is spread out.

29:19 See they not how Allah originates creation, then repeats it: truly that is easy for Allah.

17:59 And We refrain from sending the signs, only because the men of former generations treated them as false: We sent the she-camel to the Thamud to open their eyes, but they treated her wrongfully: We only send the Signs by way of terror (and warning from evil).

Allah talked about the previous phase which is the bringing khawareg did not bring pervious nations in to Allah.

However, the new stage will lead humanity to a situation that they no longer can deny the existence of Allah.

Inshallah will continue the topic in the next part in my next khotbah.

Second Khotbah,

9:71 and [as for] the believers, both men and women they are close unto one another: [99] they [all] enjoin the doing of what is right and forbid the doing of what is wrong, and are constant in prayer, and render the purifying dues, and pay heed unto God and His Apostle. It is they upon whom God will bestow His grace: verily, God is almighty, wise!

" 30:8 Have they never learned to think for themselves? [5] God has not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them without [an inner] truth and a term set [by Him]: [6] and yet, behold, there are many people who stubbornly deny the truth that they are destined to meet their Sustainer!

Truth and it is the same truth Allah has created the heavens and the earth. This truth is the precise and accurate rules and regulations.

54:49 BEHOLD, everything have We created in due measure and proportion;

3:67 Abraham was not a Jew nor yet a Christian; but he was true in Faith, and bowed his will to Allah's (Which is Islam), and he joined not gods with Allah.

21:107 We sent thee not, but as a Mercy for all creatures.

Islam is the set of principle which it's core revealed to every prophet it reveals the truth about Allah. However, these revelations were meant for a specific time and place. After each message revealed, people carrying the message have diverted and the message has been distorted because it was serving a limited time. Allah said in the Quran that he could have made it one religion but it is a test for people to seek the truth. Until, the final revelation was revealed. It is for all humanity and at all times and places.

75:17 for, behold, it is for Us to gather it [in thy heart,] and to cause it to be read [as it ought to be read]. Asad(75,7) [7]

75:18 Thus, when We recite it, follow thou its wording [with all thy mind]: Asad(75,8) [8]

75:19 and then, behold, it will be for Us to make its meaning clear. Asad(75,9) [9]

If Muslims can interpret the Quran and (Hadiths in the right context), they would have reached to the ultimate truth. Quran is perfect; however it is subject to human this intellectual capability. One of the many challenges Allah has set up for the Arabs at that time to understand the quran; although it is revealed in their mother tongue, arabs could not understand it word by word. On the other hand, Allah has comforted the Prophet Mohammad, he does not have to worry about it's preservation and explaining Quran because Allah will take care of it. Our Scholars explained the Quran; however, some of them would stop on some of the verses and it was beyond that they can explain. Some of them try their best to explain these verses but the time proves them that their explanation is inaccurate or simple.

When Revolution of modern science started in 19th centuries, Quran has proven it beyond credibility and with the new discoveries assisted to better understanding of some of the verses in the Quran. It also shows that Quran is book which is perfectly designed. Each word is in its place and the sequence of the verses is extraordinary.

My point is that Islam reveals the truth. This truth is not completely understood because there are always complex. Islam is universal and for all times. However, human mind only can sense the time and the place which he/she is living in. The truth however, is only one regardless time and place."

Copy of Friday's Speech:

"First of all, Allah in the Qur’an explained how He created Adam (PBUH). He states in different verses that he had created Adam from clay. Behold, thy Lord said to the angels: "I am about to create man from clay: Surah 38 Verse 71

The similitude of Jesus before God is as that of Adam; He created him from dust, then said to him: "Be". And he was. Surah 3 Verse 59.The Qur’an also clearly states Allah also created Hawa (Eve) by His Hands from the same nature of Adam. O mankind! reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single person, created, of like nature, His mate, and from them twain scattered (like seeds) countless men and women.... Surah 4 Verse 1Hence, the Qur’an does not state that Eve was created from Adam’s rib. Yet, there is an authentic Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) which uses the metaphor of the shape of a rib to describe women.
The authentic Hadiths says:

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Treat women kindly. Woman has been created from a rib and the most bent part of the rib is the uppermost. If you try to turn it straight, you will break it. And if you leave it alone, it will remain bent as it is. So treat women kindly.” (Bukhari and Muslim) .Another version adds”..if you wish to draw benefit from it, you can do so despite its shape.” Some scholars perceived the Hadiths in their literal meaning and accepted the idea that Eve was created from Adam’s rib. Yet many scholars, on the other hand, totally rejected this interpretation. They based their argument on the fact that in Arabic, the words “created from” do not necessarily refer to the substance of creation; they can also refer to the nature of something. These scholars sustain their argument with an example from the Qur’an in which Allah says “That man has been created from hastiness”. Of course, this does not mean that man’s substance is hastiness; it only refers to man’s nature and behavior. The Hadith then means that if a man wants to be happy with his wife he should not attempt to re-shape her character, but accepts her the way she is and try to be happy by understanding her habits and her personality. It can be taken as a very soft and kind Hadith recommending tenderness and implying how a wife and husband should compliment each other. Sadly it was interpreted according to the cultural traditions and bias against women in some tribal societies and that such misinterpretation gained wide circulation to foster the unislamic ideas of womens' inferiority.

This also affected the way women were perceived in the society; as their image was directly linked to the shape and “crookedness” of the rib!! There are numerous verses that state the equality of women in the public space, and the life of the prophet teaches us about the relation between a man and a woman in the private sphere. Any text should be put within the context of the paradigm and understood accordingly. We might for example, note that the poetic symbolism of ribs being the nearest bone to the heart and that the ribs of the chest protect the organs of the chest. It is a matter of how we read the text and contextualize it and search the merciful meanings in revelation, not grab the text to use it for our own purposes. "
