Climbing Access to Cochrane Lane Cliffs
The following is the UNB Rock & Ice Clubs final arrangement with CFB Gagetown regarding use of the Cochrane Lane cliffs for UNB Rock & Ice Club members. The following will be a brief breakdown of public access and club member access.
General Public:
The general public must procure a day pass to enter any “Base” property, including the Cochrane Lane cliffs area for climbing purposes. This may be done in person, at Camp Petersville on the Enniskillen Road (located 10min. before Welsford coming from Fredericton towards Saint John). For more information call CFB Gagetown at 1-506-422-2000.
UNB Rock & Ice Members:
Any UNB Rock & Ice Member or “Group” under the auspicious of UNB Rock & Ice Club shall telephone 422-2000 ext (3121), prior to climbing. It is not required to stop and procure a day pass to the site. If you were a member prior to Sept 1, and have not renewed your membership forms and waivers since Sept 1, you need to do so before you are considered a member for the current year. A membership is now offered only on a yearly basis and is the responsibility of the member to renew their membership on Sept 1 of each year.
As with any agreement, yearly renewal will be contingent upon stewardship of the land, and safe and proper use of the area, as well as the particular conditions of the arrangement (available to club members through the contact information below).
An information meeting was held for all UNB Rock and Ice members and general public Sept 22/05, 7pm discussing exact details of this arrangement. Further questions regarding this issue or the UNB Rock & Ice Climbing Club in general, may be directed to the president of the UNB Rock & Ice Club at climb@unb.ca.
Certain areas of the cliff may be closed from April to September if Peregrine falcons are nesting. Failure to defer climbing in these areas may result in complete shutdown of the cliff by the Base, forever. You really do not want to be the one responsible for that, so please stay out of closed areas (clearly marked at the cliff if present)! If unsure, contact climb@unb.ca or look for discussion posts on the Eastern Canada climbing forum.
