Copyright

There are several aspects of the Canadian Copyright Act which are of particular interest to us in the area of multimedial works. Although copyright is in place for the protection and economic benefit of the creator of a work, educational institutions are entitled to certain exemptions. It is to be noted that the rights and exceptions negotiated by other countries in their copyright laws are different than those for Canadian copyright law. Collective contracts may even differ from province to province. There are some exceptions given to educational institutions with regard to audio-visual works. These exceptions pertain to institutions, or their representatives (which now include students) and are for educational or training purposes, for non-profit, and done before an audience consisting primarily of students of the institution.
