One of the most important traits of a successful business person is the ability to go out into the world and network. With the current economic crisis it is harder than ever to find a job and having a long list of contacts that you can call on is essential.
This year business students at the University of New Brunswick received the opportunity to network with professionals in the community like never before, with the new Marketing Student Association (MSA). This is the first marketing association of its kind at UNB and its introduction was a huge success.
The MSA strives to give business students the opportunity to participate in speaker workshops, network with industry professionals, and to get the inside scoop on what’s really happening in the marketing industry. Members not only get the amazing benefits of networking but also enjoy one-of-a-kind Co-op and graduate opportunities and gain experience in fundraising events to help build their resumes. The Co-op opportunities include work terms with companies that members have networked with through the MSA.
The MSA held three major events throughout the year, all of which gave business students the opportunity to meet and network with successful business people from around the province. Guest speakers Francis McGuire and David Hay spoke at the first marketer’s night and gave a keynote presentation on the topic of competitive advantage. Other speakers included Jody Richards, Director of Product Development at WestJet and J. Michael McGhee, from the Toronto Dominion Bank.
Myles Malley, the upcoming president of the MSA, said he would “like to thank everyone who contributed and participated this past year. Without their support the MSA could not have been a success”.
When the club begins its second year, Malley says, "We hope to build upon our success by continuing with some past programs (like the speakers series), and by expanding into new areas. More importantly, we're putting a much bigger emphasis on bringing marketing students closer to the local business community to help them build networks and gain practical experience.” |
