Qualitatives 2008

About the Conference

The Qualitative Analysis Conference, more affectionately known as The Qualitatives, began in 1984 to provide a supportive environment where people interested in using a symbolic interactionist perspective and ethnographic method in analyses of deviant behaviour could share their research. It was soon broadened to include other substantive areas of research but maintained a commitment to showcasing a Chicago School approach to the ethnographic study of social life. Over time, as qualitative research became more diverse and accepted, the conference welcomed a wider variety of qualitative methods. What began as a conference to provide a supportive environment during a period of intellectual hostility became a conference dedicated to celebrating qualitative research in its many forms.

The Qualitatives was inaugurated by Professor Bob Prus of Waterloo University. With the support of colleagues at McMaster University, and financial support from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Bob organized the first three meetings. Subsequent Qualitatives were hosted by McMaster University, Carleton University, the University of New Brunswick, York University, OISE (University of Toronto), and the University of Windsor.

The Qualitatives has maintained a number of traditions. Among them, it has always moved from host institution to host institution, tending to remain at least two years at each location. It has always been an international conference drawing participants from around the world. The conference has always included both novice and experienced researchers, making no distinction between them. Finally, the Qualitatives has prided itself on being a ‘friendly’ conference where participants practice a genuine form of collegiality that only enhances the intellectual acumen of discussion.
